Netflix Renews Dear White People for a Second Season

Netflix has confirmed a second season of Dear White People, the hit TV spinoff of Justin Simien’s critically acclaimed satirical film of the same name. The series is set at a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface. A group of students of color must navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness and activism in the millennial age.

Each of the first season’s 10 episodes follows a different character, stripping away blanket stereotypes and forcing other characters—and viewers themselves—to reconsider preconceived notions about various outsiders. While the first season mainly re-examined events in the movie from a medley of perspectives with added character growth, it will be interesting to see what new plots Simien and crew examine in season two.

The show stars Logan Browning, Brandon P. Bell, Antoinette Robertson, DeRon Horton, John Patrick Amedori, Ashley Blaine Featherson and Marque Richardson. Production on the ten-episode second season is slated to begin later this year. Season one premiered on Netflix on April 28. Yvette Lee Bowser will return as showrunner, with Stephanie Allain and Julia Lebedev again executive-producing. Dear White People is produced by Lionsgate for Netflix.

The pick-up comes after several shows have been axed by the streaming giant recently, including Girlboss, The Get Down and Sense8.
