Hulu Renews Pen15 and Ramy, Announces New Series Orders from Marvel, Chrissy Teigen and Others

Another month, another slew of TV series announcements. Hulu’s serving up a smorgasbord of limited and regular series to keep themselves competitive in the increasingly crowded streaming service market. Let’s dig in.

Celebrated freshman comedies Pen15 and Ramy are both being renewed for a second season (along with Shrill, in case you forgot). Pen15, which follows best friends Maya and Anna as they navigate middle school in 2000, will return for 14 episodes (check out Paste’s review of the first season here). Ramy explores the titular character’s life as a young Muslim Egyptian-American living in New Jersey. It garnered an impressive nine out of 10 in its Paste review, so we’re pretty thrilled that it’s back for at least 10 more episodes.

As for new content, Hulu has ordered two live-action series from Marvel Television: Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom. The former stars Gabriel Luna (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as anti-hero (we certainly haven’t tired of those, have we?) Robbie Reyes, who resides on the Texas/Mexico border and is tethered to a demon. When he transforms into the Rider, Robbie seeks revenge upon evil-doers but lacks control over his powers. The series is being executive produced by showrunner Ingrid Escajeda, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb. Marvel’s Helstrom, on the other hand, features Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the son and daughter of a serial killer, who track down and deliver justice to the scum of society. Showrunner Zbyszewski and Marvel Television’s Loeb are serving as executive producers.

Fellow Marvel Television family member Marvel’s Runaways has been renewed for a third season, which, alongside Ghost Rider and Helstrom, will join Hulu’s burgeoning Marvel universe, which also features adult animated series Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show and Marvel’s Howard The Duck, which will build up to Marvel’s The Offenders.

The streaming service has cooked up a multi-year and multi-show deal with David Chang (founder and chef of the Momofuku restaurant group) and social media maven Chrissy Teigen, focused on mouth-watering food originals. One of the first projects is the cooking show tentatively named Family Style, which “will revolve around the ways in which people express their love for friends and family by cooking and eating together,” per Hulu’s announcement. Another initial order is the documentary series currently titled Eater’s Guide To The World, which will feature the expertise of Vox Media Studios’ food and travel network Eater.

Everything seems to be coming up Teigen, who, besides making TIME’s latest 100 Most Influential People list, also inked a two-year deal with Hulu through which she’ll be curating and producing original content “which could range from scripted drama series to original talk shows.” Color us intrigued.

New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty’s novel Nine Perfect Strangers is getting a small-screen adaptation on Hulu starring Nicole Kidman (who is also producing alongside Emmy Award-winner Bruna Papandrea). The Oscar-winning actor will play Masha, the director of a health-and-wellness resort where nine stressed urbanites try to find some inner peace. The series from co-showrunners and -writers David E. Kelley and John Henry Butterworth is set to debut in late 2020.

Last, not least, Kate McKinnon is starring in a new limited series The Dropout (based on the ABC News podcast of the same name) as disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes. It’s match that feels like a gift from SNL heaven, and hearing McKinnon’s take on Holmes’ strange baritone voice is going to be reason enough to tune in.
