Everybody’s Live builds on John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA, the six-night live experiment that aired as part of Netflix’s 2024 comedy festival, Netflix Is a Joke. (It made our list of the best talk shows of 2024, because it was good.) Richard Kind, Mulaney’s announcer and sidekick, returns, as does Saymo, the food delivery robot. Everybody’s in LA was an intentionally shaggy combination of celebrity guests, comedians, and subject matter experts talking about various issues important to Los Angeles, like earthquakes and the impending death of all of its palm trees. (Did you know they aren’t native? I didn’t, not until Ed Begley Jr.’s daughter told me on Mulaney’s show.) And then a band would play. Good times.
The project continues Mulaney’s collaboration with Netflix, which has hosted his stand-up specials, including John Mulaney: Baby J (2023), The Comeback Kid (2015), and Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018). It also aligns with Netflix’s push to ramp up its live programming, following events such as the Roast of Tom Brady, comedy specials from Chris Rock and Joe Rogan, the Jake Paul/Mike Tyson fight, and a Christmas Day NFL game lineup.
What can we expect? Mulaney offered a mission statement at a Netflix event in January: “We will be live globally with no delay. We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news. We will always be reckless. Netflix will always provide us with data that we will ignore.” Whatever happens, it’ll be happening live. Everybody’s Live airs Wednesdays at 7 p.m. PT / 10 p.m. ET, beginning March 12; here’s that trailer.
