Riverdale Meets the City in the First Trailer for The CW’s Katy Keene Spinoff

The CW has unveiled the first extended trailer for its forthcoming Katy Keene series, the latest spinoff to unfold from the Riverdale universe.

Katy Keene stars YA-drama darling Lucy Hale in its titular role, the New York City-bound personal shopper in pursuit of fashion stardom, and finds Riverdale’s newly departed (escaped?) singer-songwriter Josie McCoy character crossing over into the series’ new universe.

The trailer gives the first few glimpses into the characters at the series’ center trying to make things work in the dirty-grimy-glitzy city: We see Josie embroiling herself in romantic drama with a hotshot music producer, Jonny Beauchamp’s aspiring Broadway dancer Jorge Lopez struggling to find his footing in the performance world and Keene being called a “gutter girl” by a woman in sitcom-mom loose curls.

Interestingly, the trailer for Katy Keene doesn’t give the impression that the series is as dark as its forerunner. In fact, Katy Keene doesn’t look dark at all—sure, its color scheme is muted, but its cinematography appears light-filled, ritzy and almost ‘80s-inspired. It’s only a matter of time before a masked killer comes to wreak havoc on Manhattan.

A premiere date for the CW project has yet to be announced, but the series is “coming soon,” per the trailer.
