Luke Cage ’s official Twitter account announced over the weekend that the show would be getting a second season. The short accompanying video, which shows a sign in Pop’s Barber Shop lighting up with the words “Season 2 Coming Soon,” doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on.
Based on his Twitter feed, series creator Cheo Hodari Coker will be back as showrunner, and, like the teaser, he too says the new season will be coming soon . How soon, though, is the question. Netflix and Marvel have five seasons of television on the way, and that’s before this latest announcement: Iron Fist , The Defenders and The Punisher are all slotted for 2017, so putting Luke Cage season two in there would make the year awfully crowded. There are also new seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones in the works, but they aren’t coming until 2018 . Presumably that means we won’t be seeing any new Luke Cage until late 2018, which, by any definition of the word, doesn’t seem very “soon.”
Still, Luke Cage was one of the most talked-about shows of the year, and it might have crashed Netflix because it was so popular, so Netflix and Marvel would have been out of their minds to not give it a second season. With Jessica Jones and now Luke Cage , it’s good to see that shows with diverse casts, addressing important modern issues can be simultaneously impactful and successful.
