The 5 New TV Shows You Can’t Miss This Month

There’s a lot of TV to be thankful for this November.

Julia Roberts takes on her first TV role in Amazon’s Homecoming (November 2). Outlander finally returns to Starz on November 4. And HBO’s first non-English language series, My Brilliant Friend, based on the beloved novel by Elena Ferrante, premieres November 18. And Paste will be here for all of that.

But, once again, we don’t want you to miss anything. So we’ve sorted through all that this month has to offer and come up with the five new shows you can’t miss in November.

1. The Cry
Executive Producers: Claire Mundell, Gaynor Holmes and Elizabeth Kilgarriff
Stars: Jenna Coleman, Ewen Leslie
Premiere Date: November 8 on Sundance Now

My first daughter was a crier. She cried early, often and loudly. Until you’ve experienced it firsthand, there are no words to describe how challenging it can be. I still have an irrational anger at new moms who look well rested and say their newborn slept through the night at two weeks old. Every parent’s nightmare is explored in this four-episode series, which premiered in Britain at the end of September. New parents Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and Alistair (Ewen Leslie) travel from Scotland to Alistair’s native Australia so his family can meet the baby. Things quickly go awry when their baby goes missing. The already struggling couple is rapidly under public scrutiny. The Cry weaves in and out of time showing how the couple first met, the exhaustion so present in the early days of parenthood and the devastation when the thing you love the most is taken from you.

2. Westside
Executive Producers: Kevin Bartel, Richard McKerrow, Michael Flutie, Sun de Graaf, Lara Spotts
Stars:
Premiere Date: November 9 at Netflix

Netflix takes on MTV in this reality series about nine aspiring musicians in Los Angeles. The series plays more like The Real World than American Idol, although it does feature Pia Toscano, who finished ninth in the tenth season in American Idol in 2011. The eight-episode series intersperse the songs and music videos the gang writes and performs and their day to day lives as they work to support themselves and deal with their problems.

3. Sally4Ever
Executive Producers: Julia Davis
Stars: Catherine Shepherd, Alex Macqueen, Julia Davis
Premiere Date: November 11 on HBO

Watching this HBO comedy makes me really think I want to watch the original British version of Camping, which was created by and starred Julia Davis. Why didn’t HBO let Davis bring that show stateside instead of turning it over to Lena Dunham? In this new HBO comedy, Davis stars as Emma, a night club singer and free spirit who bursts into Sally’s (Catherine Shepherd) life and upends it. Sally is stuck in a passionless, 10-year relationship with David (Alex McQueen). Nothing in her life is that exciting until Sally comes along. But then it becomes maybe a little too exciting, and Sally isn’t quite sure what she’s gotten herself into.

4. Escape at Dannemora
Executive Producers: Ben Stiller
Stars: Benicio Del Toro, Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Eric Lange, Bonnie Hunt and David Morse
Premiere Date: November 18 on Showtime

The truth, as we know, can be stranger than fiction. And the 2015 escape of two inmates from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York is definitely one of them. Ben Stiller directs and executive produces the eight-hour miniseries, which follows prison tailor Tilly Mitchell (a nearly unrecognizable Patricia Arquette) as she befriends and becomes sexually involved with Richard Matt (Benicio del Toro) and David Sweat (Paul Dano). Tilly eventually helps both men escape leaving a community in terror and her husband and her family confounded by her actions.

5. Queen America
Executive Producers: Alethea Jones
Stars: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Belle Shouse, Teagle F. Bougere, Rana Roy, Molly Price, Isabella Amara, Megan West and Judith Light
Premiere Date: November 18 on Facebook Watch

I hate to break it to you, but maybe we are going to have to get into Facebook Watch? Catherine Zeta-Jones is the latest movie star to take on a leading role in a TV series. In this 10-episode series, she stars as Vicki Ellis, the best pageant coach in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is going to turn Samantha (Bella Shouse) into a star. The premise sounds similar to Netflix’s dreadful Insatiable, but we remain cautiously optimistic that Zeta-Jones will make this one we can’t miss. (Fun fact: Her real-life husband, Michael Douglas, also takes on TV this month as the star of Netflix’s The Kominsky Method.)
