ABC Developing Series Based on Life of Slain Tejano Superstar Selena

ABC announced Thursday that the network has committed to a music-driven family drama inspired by the life and legacy of Tejano music superstar Selena Quintanilla, per Deadline.

The as-of-yet-untitled project will be helmed by music talent manager Scooter Braun’s SB Projects in cooperation with Quintanilla’s father Abraham Quintanilla and sister Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga. It will be written by Scandal scribe Miguel Nolla. The story will focus on chart-topping, award-winning pop star Alex Guerra as she deals with love, a demanding career and family secrets upon returning to her estranged Texas family.

During her lifetime, Selena was one of Latin music’s biggest crossover artists, selling over 60 million records worldwide. Her pop-culture status was cemented by her tragic 1995 death at age 23 at the hands of her former fan club president, as well as by the 1997 biopic Selena, starring fellow Latin sensation Jennifer Lopez.

Along with Braun’s SB Projects and ABC Studios, Campanario Entertainment will executive produce the project.

Whether the pilot sees the light of day remains to be seen, but hopefully, Selena’s devoted fan base will be able to see the icon on the screen once again.
