New The Umbrella Academy Trailer Revels in Doom, Dysfunction and Spontaneous Dancing

The phrase “gifted kids” is given new meaning in the first full trailer for The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s adaptation of the Eisner Award-winning comic book series of the same name.

The show’s 10 episodes follow the members of the Umbrella Academy, seven of the 43 babies all born on the same day in 1989 to women who showed no signs of being pregnant the day before. Billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopts these seven kids, all of whom possess extraordinary powers, in a Professor X-meets-Daddy Warbucks move. Flash forward 17 years, and the six surviving members of the Academy reunite to piece together the puzzle surrounding their father’s death and ward off the impending apocalypse.

The first teaser, released in December 2018, enjoyed a warm reception, and this trailer has also been gaining traction, in particular for its backing music. The video features an exclusive cover of “Hazy Shade of Winter” by Gerard Way, the comics’ creator and former My Chemical Romance lead vocalist.

Full of bickering and family dysfunction, the trailer shows some promising cast chemistry. Ellen Page comes back to her superhero roots, this time as Vanya. Robert Sheehan brings some drunken swagger as Klaus, returning to vaguely familiar territory considering his stint as an immortal hooligan on Misfits. The rest of the six are Luther (Tom Hopper, Game of Thrones), Diego (David Castañeda, Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman, A Million Little Things) and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn).

The forthcoming show, produced by Universal Cable Productions for Netflix, will arrive on the streaming platform Feb. 15—find Netflix’s complete February slate here. Executive producers include Steve Blackman (also the showrunner), Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Way and Gabriel Bá (the source material’s illustrator).
