Watch the Gut-Wrenching First Trailer for Ava DuVernay’s Netflix Limited Series When They See Us

The limited Netflix series When They See Us, exploring the stories of the five boys labeled the “Central Park Five,” finally has a full-length trailer. These teenagers, all young people of color, were wrongly accused of rape in 1989 and convicted of a crime they didn’t commit. When They See Us follows these boys over 25 years as they become men behind bars, are finally exonerated in 2002 and reach a settlement with the city of New York in 2014.

Clocking in at just under three minutes, the trailer proves a harrowing watch. Co-writer and director Ava DuVernay viscerally depicts the blatant racism these boys experienced in the so-called American “justice” system. Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight), Jovan Adepo (Fences), Freddy Miyares (Elementary), Justin Cunningham (Succession) and Chris Chalk (12 Years a Slave) portray Harlem teens Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana, Jr., Kevin Richardson and Yusef Salaam, respectively. The star-studded cast also includes the formidable Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), John Leguizamo (John Wick), the now-disgraced Felicity Huffman (American Crime, heh), Niecy Nash (Selma) and Blair Underwood (Quantico).
