All 13 Episodes of Jessica Jones Season Two Will Be Directed By Women

Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said during her panel at Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment on Friday that the show will be employing only women directors for its second season.

According to Variety, Rosenberg said that the original goal was to increase the number of women behind the camera (three out of nine directors on the first season were women), and Marvel was on board for it, until some unspecified person suggested solely hiring women.

Rosenberg said that the increased gender diversity was “a conscious decision and it’s very important that showrunners do that.”

Of course, this won’t be the first show to give women their due behind the camera. Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar, still in the middle of its first season, has only women directing all 10 of its episodes.

For a show that heavily focuses on overcoming physical and mental domestic abuse and on the relationships between women, having only women in charge of Jessica Jones’ creative direction is a smart decision that can only help the show tell honest and genuine stories.

There’s no word yet on who the actual directors are. Season two of Jessica Jones will likely premiere sometime in 2018.
