Netflix’s lifeblood comes from the movies it recommends, a gesture of exclusivity that supplies less-known titles based on user ratings. Through Cinematch, which analyzes viewers’ individual ratings and trends, Netflix generates new suggestions and uses them to keep queues full and customers committed.

After a recent pact with video game consoles to make its Watch Instantly service available away from computers, and another with Starz to expand the library of titles it offers, Netflix has announced it closed a long-gestating deal with TiVo to provide mutual subscribers with 12,000 movies and TV shows available on demand.

Amid varied threats from like-minded competitors, Netflix has steadily maintained its dominance among nontraditional DVD services with a superior selection, social networking and other features. Most important among the company’s recent innovations, though, is Watch Instantly, a streaming catalog of thousands of film and TV titles that are available for free to most Netflix subscribers and help ensure Netflix’s long-term vitality as instant video becomes more widespread online.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, basically the largest video game convention in the world, convened earlier this week to give the yearly swath of game announcements. Amidst the big game news of Final Fantasy XIII heading to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo offering motion control+ came some film news that's perhaps more important than anything else announced at the event.  At least, it is if you're as interested in movies as you are in games.
