Available now, Shout! Factory has released a 4-DVD set of The Johnny Cash Christmas Specials 1976-1979. While '76 and '77 were released last year, the '78 and '79 specials are new and are available separately or as part of the box set. Included on the new set are Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman, amongst others.

Horror film doesn't hold up

Ever since the Coen brothers pulled one over on viewers with the blatant but joking falsehood, “This is a true story,” thrillers “inspired by true events”—as The Strangers claims to be—have held less water. As Fargo coyly pointed out, it’s a base qualifier, and when a filmmaker flashes that credential, viewers should be alert. I suppose The Strangers could’ve been inspired by true events, inasmuch as violent crimes do occur, and sometimes they’re random. But with the film’s posters and opening credits presenting the claim, it’s clear that first-time filmmaker Bryan Bertino really wants viewers to believe it. Alone, this cheap trick wouldn’t be a huge offense, but in the context of The Strangers, it feels like Bertino is presenting it as a way to make an unscary movie more chilling than it deserves to be.

The Wu-Tang Clan, the groundbreaking nine-member rapping troupe, will have its meteoric rise to fame documented in the Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang, set to debut on BET Nov. 13. The documentary, directed by Gerald K. Barclay, will be available on DVD Nov. 18.

Although the animated band is almost creepily popular in real life, the fictional Dethklok of Adult Swim remains our favorite face of bombastic, vaguely evil death-metal superstardom. They may not be able to boil an egg, but so extensive is their celebrity on Metalocalypse that it defies human conception—and often gets their fans killed.

Sorkin rewrote the rulebooks with this character-driven sitcom

The workplace has long been a productive venue for sitcoms. From the studios of WKRP in Cincinnati and Mary Tyler Moore’s WJM-TV to a bar named Cheers and, most recently, a paper supply company in Scranton, Pa., the drudgery of the work and ineptitude of the workers have provided light laughs for Americans at the end of the day. But as a screenwriter for films like A Few Good Men and The American President, Aaron Sorkin loved his job and was very good at it. So, naturally, when he developed his first TV series for ABC 10 years ago, he filled it with characters who loved their jobs and were very good at them.

To the enthusiastic delight of fans, Warner Bros. has announced plans to release the Flaming Lips film Christmas on Mars on DVD. And now details about the DVD are being released too...joy to the world!

James Brown: gone but certainly not forgotten. The Godfather of Soul's legacy continues to live on with a new three-disc DVD box set from Shout Factory titled I Got The Feelin’: James Brown in the ’60s.

Anyone who's followed The Boondocks as a comic strip or TV show knows that a few things consistently tick off creator Aaron McGruder: blind patriotism, faux-gangsta posturing, and Black Entertainment Television.
