On Grinderman’s eponymous 2007 debut, Nick Cave howled, “I don’t need you to set me free.” Three years later, Grinderman 2 finds the godfather of macabre rock ‘n’ roll having a hell of a time. The ragged nine-track album rages with songs that build from taut guitar jams to full-blown tantrums. Cave touches on religion and consumerism with his signature smirk, but he seems more focused on primal concerns. Guitars squeal and writhe, bass lines slither through the mud and Cave coos about “hanging around your kitchenette” so he can “get a pot to cook you in.” Lead single “Heathen... read more

Tender Prey: 8.2/10.0 The Good Son: 7.8/10.0 Henry’s Dream: 8.0/10.0 Gleaming like a shiny new guillotine The second round of what will eventually be a complete set of Nick Cave reissues is filled with death and grief and sorrow and murder and rising corpses and ghost-ship chanteys and devil women and show tunes born in hell. It rules, of course. Besides showcasing a guy who’s fully comfortable with his hallucinogenic gift for literate terror, the silky-black woe-bringer’s fifth, sixth and seventh albums also mark his sneaky descent into a wittier, more accessible kind of cabaret-blues. These three... read more

Thinking man’s diva revels in ’80s-pop artifice Alison Goldfrapp never does anything halfway. From the icy, otherworldly electro-acoustic soundscapes of 2000’s Felt Mountain to her subsequent romps through dance-pop and leering glam, she’s become a more dangerous and dignified counterpart to the look-at-me theatrics of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Now, following an unexpected shift toward pastoral psych-pop on 2008’s Seventh Tree, she and collaborator Will Gregory have circled back to dance music, this time with a pronounced emphasis on ’80s synth-pop and Italo disco.... read more

Transient, experimental rockers continue to reward, evolve Geography has always defined Liars. The band—which formed in Los Angeles with a menacing Australian frontman named Angus Andrew—first received attention after relocating to New York. Liars would later make an album in New Jersey that was loosely based on German witchcraft, only to actually move to Berlin for their next album.... read more

Scandinavian electro-opera doesn’t translate from stage to disc Co-written by Scandinavian duo the Knife and Berlin-based one-member-bands Planningtorock and Mt. Sims, Tomorrow, in a Year has been billed as an opera based on Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, but it’s actually more of an elaborate, multimedia performance-art piece. Premiering in Copenhagen last fall, the production incorporated dance, video and laser lights to create an eerily unsettling experience. The concept was ambitious but, unfortunately, in releasing Tomorrow as an album, the team divorces the music from the stage and leaves the songs stranded in a mire of effects and noise.... read more

Siblings Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson of Sweden’s The Knife spent the aughts delivering dark electro music from off the beaten path. True to form, Tomorrow, in a Year, The Knife’s first release of the new decade comes from way, way off that path.... read more
