Final Fantasy VII Returning to PC with Re-Release

Well, it’s official. Final Fantasy VII, the series’ breakout entry and seemingly eternal cash cow, is marked for PC re-release. A website for the upcoming title recently surfaced, vaguely promising that it was “coming soon.”... read more

Oil Rush Review (PC/Mac/Linux)

Oil Rush Review (PC/Mac/Linux)

Oil Rush is a counter-argument to the idea that real-time strategy games don’t have enough strategy. It attempts to simplify the style by slightly relaxing player control and adding in tower defense components. Combined with an interesting premise – a water-flooded future earth has factions squabbling over oil – and delightful graphics for an indie game, it has a lot to recommend it at first glance. By only trying to simplify some of the tactics used in the game without balancing other components, Oil Rush consigns itself to be known as... read more

Dustforce Review (PC)

Dustforce Review (PC)

A couple of weeks ago I called Super Crate Box “assembly line gaming”. Dustforce makes a more explicit reference to manual labor. The point is to sweep up dirt as quickly and smoothly as possible. It’s like videogames are preparing us for the limited job opportunities of the future.... read more

The Binding of Isaac Review (PC/Mac)

The Binding of Isaac Review (PC/Mac)

There are some things in life too horrible to laugh at. There are other things so horrible that perhaps the only human response is to laugh because we will never make sense of them. Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl’s The Binding of Isaac, a darkly comedic rogue-like action RPG, explores the latter territory—it’s a game about child abuse.... read more

Trauma Review

Trauma Review
(PC)

From the psycho-sexual phantasmagoria of the Silent Hill series to the nightmarescapes of Sanitarium to countless amnesiac protagonists unraveling the riddles of identity, videogames have a long tradition of creating compelling narratives out of psychological damage and healing. It is a shame that Trauma is not part of that storied (ahem) institution.... read more
