My Official PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008 Calendar tells me I'm supposed to be going on about some "K"-named blog or another today, but you know what I just told My Official PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008 Calendar? "Shove it, I am going to post about this Troll 2 and Radiohead mashup video I just saw on Videogum instead," is what I told it. And tell me this isn't worth it, my friends.

Björk releases charity single "Nattura" with Thom Yorke

|
Björk is many, many things, but one thing she is not is boring. The Icelandic songbird has been occupying her time recently with helping come up with a fix for the sinking economy in her native country. Eerily paralleling our own problems here in the States, the Icelandic economy has crumbled under the weight of debt and skyrocketing prices, leading to the governmental takeover of banks.

Radiohead's In Rainbows sells three million copies

|
Many were baffled when Radiohead announced its "pay what you want" deal in 2007 for the band's seventh studio album In Rainbows. But the unconventional release model wasn't just a gift to fans and music lovers across the globe; it was a brilliant marketing strategy.

Unglued: Only Played Once!

|
onlyplayedonce.pngTrawling Amazon’s used CD listings, Paste noticed a startling trend. If the comments sections are to be trusted, incredible numbers of music fans are buying albums, playing them exactly one time, and then whisking them off to the land of eCommerce. To get to the bottom of this phenomenon, we embarked on a rigorous series of fake interviews with these hasty sellers, to find out why a certain album graced their CD player exactly once, and not a moment more.

Radiohead webcast to compete with Obama speech

|
homepage photo by Doug Seymour
Fans of Radiohead and Barack Obama alike are in for a tough decision this evening: watch Obama's sure-to-be-historic speech accepting his party's nomination, or catch a live webcast of Radiohead's last American concert (for a while) at the band's official website. (Fortunately, there are such things as TiVo and YouTube.) Radiohead bass player Colin Greenwood announced earlier today that the band will be streaming its sold-out Santa Barbara, Calif. show this evening.

Young @ Heart Chorus

|

Sorry for the general abscence this summer, but Sweet Talk has been on the road doing the festival circuit.  Sweet Talk was proud of bringing several artists to stages all around the country, but one of the absolute highlights was bringing the Young @ Heart Chorus to Newport Folk.  They are not a novelty, they are the truest form of musical expression, full of humor, joy, passion and poignant emotion.  And yes, I did cry during their Radiohead Cover of "Fake Plastic Trees":

Choke soundtrack to include Radiohead, MMJ, DCFC, more

|
Despite the quotes coming from Chuck Palahniuk himself, Radiohead won't be contributing a previously unreleased song to the Choke soundtrack.

Big sigh.

Now, with that out of the way, we can tell you that the soundtrack, due out on Sept. 23, will feature an orgasmic selection of tracks, including seven that appear in the film along with eight others notable to the vision of actor, director and screenwriter Clark Gregg.

Radiohead contributes song to Chuck Palahniuk's Choke

|
It's funny the way the creative process finds inspiration.

Fact: Chuck Palahnuik has gone on record saying he listened to an overabundance of Radiohead while writing his 2001 novel Choke.

Fact: Radiohead's "Exit Music (For A Film)" (from 1997's OK Computer) contains the lyrics, "We hope that your rules and wisdom choke you / Now we are one, in everlasting peace," and then repeats the phrase, "We hope that you choke."

But apparently this is not the album that inspired the novel.

Oasis does a remix, Liam Gallagher picks a fight

|
In the midst of the Oasis/Jay-Z feud, Liam Gallagher stays on the assault, this time taking a shot at Coldplay and Radiohead fans stating bluntly that they're "boring and ugly." All of this drama comes just months before the release of Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis' seventh album, and the release of the band's first-ever remix, "The Shock of the Lightning."

So, uh, does anyone smell media attention desperation?

Lollapalooza 2008 round-up

|
1Lollapalooza_Bang_Camaro.jpgAbove: Bang Camaro

Another Lollapalooza weekend has come and gone and music fans of all stripes left happy (unless, of course, they were fans of the Weakerthans, who had to cancel as a result of travel problems). Despite a record attendance of 225,000 fans, festivities and rock went on seamlessy under sun-filled skies each day. The festival's organizers outdid themselves this year with opening acts, starting the weekend out with a bang. Bang Camaro, that is. Other rising stars followed suit on days two and three with the Ting Tings belting out their infectious pop tunes (we overheard Love and Rockets' Daniel Ash mentioning that they were the only reason he was at Lollapalooza) while Austin's Octopus Project wowed us with a 500 balloon salutes and Yvonne Lambert's mesmerizing theremin skills.

For many award events, the fervency of surrounding discussion seems as influential as the actual bestowing of accolades. The Mercury Prize, given to the best album by a British or Irish artist made in the previous year, is no exception.

The Best Concerts I've Seen

|
I just finished posting the 12 best concerts I've ever seen. Rather than have them all in 12 separate posts, I thought I'd consolidate the list here. I was recently digging through a pile of ticket stubs I've saved, finding cool concert after cool concert, from high school, college and especially, these last six years since we started Paste magazine. There are some big omissions—I've still never seen Springsteen or The Stones. I've only in the last few years checked off Dylan and Prince (neither made the list and only Prince was close). Some of the best concerts I picked are obvious choices. Others are more offbeat or just personal. But all are seared into my memory; for each night, I stood (or occasionally sat) in awe of the performance that was given. So here are the 12 best concerts I've seen:

Nigel Godrich officially has the coolest Basement of all time. Rather than housing clunky appliances and cast-off toys (who really used Lincoln Logs?), the famed record producer’s Basement is home to a recording studio that features live performance videos of musicians like Damien Rice, The White Stripes, Sonic Youth and Radiohead.

Radiohead announce finalists for video contest

|
homepage photo by Kevin Westenberg
With the primary election season finally finished, we as a nation can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to truly important exercises in democracy. Namely, online contests. And what could be more democratic than a band letting its fans take the reins? Radiohead's a bit of an old hand at this, but anyone can release master files for remixes with the click of a mouse these days. To trust your fans with the creation of a music video, well, that takes guts. It's a good thing that our favorite art-rockers were up to the task, because they put the creation of their next music video in our (evidently capable) hands. The epic contest is drawing to a close, with the field narrowed to a final 13 candidates.

Prince performs Radiohead's

What happens when a now-copyright-conservative artist covers a blockbuster from a copyright-radical artist at one of the biggest music festivals of the summer? In this case, the video goes up on YouTube, and is then promptly removed. To add insult to injury, the clip of Prince’s seven-minute rendition of “Creep” was replaced with a snore-worthy clip of two birds preening. We tell no lies.

We swear we'd stop writing about them if they'd stop doing stuff. But our dear Radioheads haven't quit, and so we'll dutifully report on the stuff—or things—they're doing. To that end, we bring you the fourth edition of the (admittedly no longer weekly) Paste Radiohead Roundup! Get excited!

Radiohead embarks upon world tour:
And they play Atlanta tomorrow night! (Squee!) Ahem... The seasoned amphitheater-hopping band opened its string of 48 dates Monday night in West Palm Beach, Fla. Fansite AtEaseWeb.com live blogs every show, if you're so into Radiohead (admit it, you are!) that you want to know how the set differs from night to night. They'll stay on the proverbial road until October, when the band plans on reentering the studio, guitarist Ed O'Brien told the BBC's Newsbeat.

Fan remixes of "Nude" complete:
After a month of uploads, submissions are no longer being accepted and 2253 remixes were posted at RadioheadRemix.com. The current top three in the voting were made by Spor, Lost Memories and Holy Fuck, but the polls don't close until June 1. The band promises to listen personally to the best of them.

In Rainbows animated video contest reaches semi-finals:
By way of providing fans one more opportunity to have Radiohead experience their artistic product about Radiohead's artistic product, the aniBoom.com competition we told you about is one step away from reaching Radiohead-judging level. From more than 60 videos, 10 emerged as semi-finalists this week, exploring seven of the songs from In Rainbows. Each semi-finalist now gets $1,000 to make a one-minute animation that will be watched and voted upon June 9, after which the finalists will advance to a June 23 judging. The grand winner will be announced June 30. You can watch all of the semi-finalists' videos here. This one's by Videogruppe of the song "Reckoner," and features a big red felt guy:

Well folks, that about wraps it up for this edition of the Radiohead Roundup. Stay tuned for more (because with these guys, we're sure there will be more).

Radiohead to fans: 'Remix! Network! Come see us!'

|

With any other band, we might be feeling a bit stifled by now, a bit overwhelmed by all the attention that its members have been lavishing on the public, a bit scurred by the fact that their images appear around every corner of the Internet. We might have been tempted to file a restraining order, if they were any other band.

However, Radiohead is not just any other band, and regardless of the fact that good ol' Thom Yorke and Co. just. won't. quit. our love affair with them continues, and will probably continue until eternity and beyond. So, here we are, reporting Radiohead news once again, and here you are, reading it. The world is as it should be.

The latest from Radiohead follows suit with the last we heard from the band (a whole two weeks ago)—the open call for fan-created videos apparently began a new trend, because now the group's back with a new contest/interactive activity. They want you to remix "Nude," the latest single off of In Rainbows. Fans can buy any of five (or all five) components of the song off of iTunes, then splice and dice them to their hearts' desires.

Individuals can then upload the tracks onto RadioheadRemix.com and vote for their favorites. The current leader is a remix by the Toronto-based experimental band Holy Fuck, and it's pretty awesome—but don't just take our word for it. Check it out and then create some of your very own music magic.

And for the truly obsessed fan looking to meet other truly obsessed fans, consider a visit to w.a.s.t.e. central, a Radiohead social networking site (yes, it's true!) that contains the latest touring news, photos, and more.

Although arguably no different than any of the other festivals Radiohead will play this year, this time, the band is getting a fest in its honor. Proving perhaps the most Radiohead-centric tourstop of all for the guys, June 12 at the Parc Del Forum in Barcelona, Spain, will see performances from Bat for Lashes, ENEMC (Ensemble Nacional de Música Contemporánea de España presenting "Off Computer," music based on Johnny Greenwood songs) Low, Clinic, Modeselektor and Liars (who have recently had to reschedule their European tour), as well as the band itself.

Radiohead fansite At Ease explains that the one-day festival is a tribute to Radiohead, and that all the bands performing have either influenced or been influenced by the famous Brits. Also, the honorees are rumored to have handpicked several of the acts, especially believable because they'd already handpicked Liars for something else.

The allocation of tickets for sale through W.A.S.T.E. (the official Radiohead store) has already sold out, but tickets are being sold through TickTackTicket.com as well, and there's no prohibitive all-caps warning next to the event on their page so far. The band encourages travel by public transportation and offers other festival info here.

Radiohead to judge In Rainbows animated video contest

|

We understand you're disoriented. It has been just over a full month since we reported to you about Radiohead here at Paste! After such a strong tradition of talking your ear off about the band, it seems we've slacked off lately. Time to make it up to you.

Here then, at last, is some Radiohead news:

Animation site aniBoom is hosting a competition for storyboard or animated music video ideas to accompany In Rainbows. The competition will be judged by none other than the Radioheads themselves, as well as aniBoom and its community (which actually means an audience ranking).

"It's the perfect match between revolutionary music and the mind blowing possibilities of animation," says the blurb on the contest site. Submissions began yesterday; the semi-finals will take place March 28; viewing and voting will be June 9; finals June 23; and, finally, the grand winner will be announced June 30. The 10 semi-finalists will receive $1,000 each to create a one-minute video clip, and the grand prize winner will receive $10,000 to create a full-length Radiohead music video, which will be given web-wide distribution with aniBoom marketing behind it.

Here's the promo from aniBoom.com:

As previously reported, Radiohead is touring extensively over the next couple months. It appears Liars will be opening for the band's May dates. Rumors, as yet unconfirmed, have begun circling that Underworld may also open later in the tour.
