The Good Wife Showrunners to Exit After Season 7

TV News The Good Wife

The renewal fate of CBS’ longstanding legal drama The Good Wife may still be up in the air, but the involvement of series creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King isn’t.

The Kings are stepping down from their current roles at the end of the series’ seventh season. The news shouldn’t come as a major surprise given the Kings long and repeated stance on the series’ direction and ultimate conclusion. Plans for The Good Wife were based on a seven year storyline, so another year would go beyond their established creative desires.

“The bottom line is CBS is trying to make deals for an eighth season, so we would be there in a supervisory role, but the storytelling we have will finish in the seventh year, King told TVLine.

The announcement was made today during CBS’ Television Critics Association winter press tour by the network’s new president Glenn Geller. Although the show’s return isn’t definite, Geller expressed that the series has several go-to producers that could replace The Kings if the series does return next fall. But first the show and its ratings have to make it through the spring.

“It’s just January, so we have to determine if there will be another season or not,” Geller told the TCA audience.

The Kings shared with TVLine that the season seven ending won’t put “Alicia in her grave.” It will, however, be a fitting conclusion to the story they had planned.

This summer audiences can catch the premiere of The Kings’ new political satire BrainDead on CBS. Meanwhile, their series Vatican City is still in development at Amazon.
