Paul McCartney Signs With Capitol Records

Music News Paul McCartney

In a momentous move, Sir Paul McCartney has signed a worldwide recording agreement with Capitol Records. McCartney’s contract with the record label is a homecoming for him—starting with 1964’s Meet the Beatles!, Capitol Records was the primary distributor of Beatles albums in the United States. Despite the Beatles’ somewhat tense relationship with Capitol, McCartney stayed signed with them until 1979 when he signed with Columbia, only to return to Capitol again in 1985, leaving again in 2007 to become Hear Music’s first signed artist.

While this may not be McCartney’s first time signing with Capitol, it is certainly the most significant. The contract comprises the entirety of McCartney’s post-Beatles work, including more than 30 albums and music from his solo career, as well as the music from Wings and a handful of his other collaborative endeavors.

McCartney, his management team, and Capitol are working together to formulate a plan for the artist’s discography. “It would be simply impossible to overstate what an honor it is to welcome Paul back to Capitol” said Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, “It’s a homecoming of one of the greatest musical artists of all time to the label that first helped bring his incredible music to the world.” “This is genuinely exciting for me,” McCartney said. “Not only was Capitol my first U.S. record label, but the first record I ever bought was Gene Vincent’s ‘Be-Bop-A-Lula’ on the Capitol label.”

McCartney, 74, is currently working on a new studio album.
