The Original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Were Not Happy With the Recent Reboot

Just a month ago, the world received a Michael Bay-sized Power Rangers reboot that no one asked for, and we’ve been reeling in it’s melodramatic, monochromatic wake. Well … Not really, but as Paste writers, we tend to have a flair for the dramatic side of things. Anyway, we weren’t super thrilled with Power Rangers, and we weren’t alone, joined namely by any other film criticism outlet. Also, surprise, surprise, according to Comic Book, a couple of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers didn’t like it either. Sad!

David Yost, or Billy the Blue Ranger, and Walter Jones, Zack the Black Ranger, recently attended a fan convention in Chicago where they discussed a few faults in the reboot, proving that these guys really aren’t busy enough with other things. It’s kind of hilarious. Jones’ complaint was strictly character-based, as they changed elements of his character’s fighting style (which is kind of funny, because this a very ‘90s complaint). He said:

I was a little disappointed that they changed the characters around a little bit because I wanted Zach to be with his kido because Hip Hop Kido was a really important element of who I was on Power Rangers. I think if they would have added that, then there could have been some parkour and there could have been so many other elements to that character that it would have been awesome.

Sure, they could’ve added a Hip Hop Kido. Hopefully, it would’ve looked better than the original Hip Hop Kido, which you can see below.

Yost’s complaint is more centered on the transformation of the teens into the titular Rangers, and he was really not thrilled. He even went so far as to call it “lackadaisacal,” which means that we learned a new word today. Fun! Supposedly, it didn’t pack much of a punch in the newer film, and he’d love it if you guys could make that better in the sequel, okay? Thaaanks! Yost said:

The only thing I care about progression wise when they do a sequel and they morph they better bring it, and they better say “It’s Morphin Time.” When we said, ‘It’s morphing time,’ it was like, ‘Shit’s about to go down’—when they said it in the movie it was so lackadaisical. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’

Man, for real, right? Nothing could pack the punch of the original group of rough ‘n’ rowdy teens declaring the Hour of Morph, before everything turns into a weird, ‘90s cyber-fuzzed muscle flex, which you can see below, arranged in an odd supercut.

We can only hope that the next Power Rangers movie is more satisfying to Yost and Jones, not to mention the general viewing public.
