The Nintendo Switch Just Keeps Setting Sales Records

In the five-day period from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, the Nintendo Switch saw the highest sales of any Nintendo console ever in the United States, Nintendo announced Wednesday.

According to Nintendo’s internal sales figures, Nintendo products made more than $250 million in the Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday period in 2018. The Nintendo Switch set two new records: It became the best-selling Nintendo console in U.S. history for that period, surpassing even the Wii’s sales, and it had its best-selling week ever in the U.S. The console was among the most-purchased items online on Thanksgiving Day and became the top-selling videogame product online in the Black Friday through Cyber Monday period. (Nintendo’s data covers the dates between Nov. 22-26 and is specific to the U.S. only.)

For comparison, Nintendo sold approximately 800,000 Wii consoles during a similar period back in 2008. 10 years later, the Nintendo Switch has surpassed that record. Nintendo Switch hardware sales grew 115 percent compared to the same period in 2017. Additionally, lifetime sales of the Switch, which is only having its second holiday season, have reached upwards of 8.2 million units. It’s safe to assume that many of those sales might be in anticipation of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will be launched on Dec. 7 and has become not only the most pre-sold Nintendo Switch game of all time, but also the most pre-ordered Super Smash Bros. title ever.
