Barack Obama Shares His Favorite Books, Songs and Movies of 2018

Barack Obama shared his annual year-end list of his favorite books and songs on Facebook Friday, and this year, he’s also included his favorite movies of 2018.

Among his favorite books, the former president includes his wife Michelle Obama’s best-selling memoir Becoming (“obviously my favorite!”) and a few titles that appeared on his annual summer reading list from earlier this year, as well as a few books new to the list.

While Obama didn’t feature Paste’s No. 1 song of 2018, Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” his favorite songs list includes standouts like Janelle Monáe’s “Make Me Feel” (No. 11 on Paste’s list), The Carters’ “Apeshit” and Courtney Barnett’s “Need a Little Time.” Obama also paid tribute to late jazz singer Nancy Wilson and her classic album The Great American Songbook.

Obama has also compiled an impressive movies list, which features heavy-hitters like Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther and Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma while also highlighting a few underseen gems from earlier this year, such as Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace and Andrew Bujalski’s Support the Girls.

As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists. It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before.
