“Melania Trump” Borrows a Few Words for RNC Speech Explanation on Colbert

Melania Trump made headlines when her speech at the Republican National Convention on Monday night seemed to outright steal an entire paragraph from Michelle Obama’s remarks at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Surprisingly, Stephen Colbert took time out of his show to rush to Mrs. Trump’s defense and firmly state that her speechwriters are to blame. While the alleged speechwriter just admitted to the accusations, “Melania” (who looked an awful lot like Laura Benanti from Supergirl) took it upon herself to clear her name last night on The Late Show.

After a not-so-brief exchange of kisses with Colbert, “Melania” took the podium. “My fellow Americans … ” she began, posing appropriately. “This is truly the best of times, it is the worst of times.” What followed was a clever speech crafted from a careful chain-link of pop-culture references, ranging from The Lion King to The Beastie Boys.

Colbert’s writers most likely took cues from the #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuotes, in which Twitter users suggested other famous lines the possible First Lady could’ve cribbed instead. Read our selection of the best of those here and watch the “apology” above.
