At the start of the video you see above, Sarah Palin relates a story from the SNL 40th anniversary show, where Louis C.K. actually apologized to her for a series of tweets he made back in 2010. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Is there a story here?
Yes, my friend. There is a story here, and it’s a weird one.
Let’s start at the beginning. In 2010, Louis C.K. was drunk on an airplane on rum and cokes, and decided to start tweeting. Bad idea, always, but hey, he’s Louis C.K., right? Anyway, for some reason he decided to start tweeting about Sarah Palin. Buzzfeed compiled the tweets, and before I link you, just be warned that they’re super vulgar and sexual. If you still want to read them, do so here.
What’s funny about those tweets, at least to me, is that they came two years after Palin ran for VP on the Republican ticket. Why was Palin still on his brain? We may never know. Some outrage ensued—he actually had to drop out of hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when Fox News’ Greta Van Sustern and others threatened to boycott.
He’s referenced the rant a couple times in the ensuing years, telling GQ he didn’t regret it (“it’s f***ing comedy) in 2011, and saying he still thought it was funny on a Today Show appearance in 2012.
That’s where things remained until this April, at the SNL after-party, when Palin approached C.K. and told him he was funny. In turn, the comedian (who no longer has a Twitter account), decided to use that moment to apologize for what he’d written five years earlier.
“Something came over me emotionally, and I said ‘well, I owe you an apology,’ ” he told Howard Stern later. “I’ve never in a million years apologized for anything I’ve said. F— anyone else who is offended. I don’t give a shit.”
But apologize he did, and Palin responded by saying, “well, you’re a vile person.” That made him laugh, and then the former Alaska Governor invited him to go fishing with her in Alaska.
Last night, thanks to Seth Meyers, we finally heard Palin’s side, and now we live in a world where these two very different people might go fishing together in Alaska. What a time to be alive!
