Jon Stewart, the man, the myth, the legend, returned to TV last night to do what he does best: take apart dishonest media – and not Trump’s version of “dishonest media,” but rather, the hypocrites at Fox News. Stephen Colbert ceded the Late Show desk to Jon Stewart for almost ten minutes, and it was brutal.
Jon Stewart opened up the paradox of Fox News’ many criticisms against Obama and their support for Trump, centering on Sean Hannity, or “Lumpy,” as Stewart calls him. Stewart points out how Hannity and cohorts at Fox News have criticized Obama for years as being divisive, using scare tactics, using a teleprompter, being detached, being thin-skinned and non-Christian. Stewart then quickly shows how Hannity has looked right over all this when it has come to Donald Trump, sometimes even outright praising him.
Stewart showed time after time where Hannity has supported Trump where he would have attacked Obama. Hannity decries Obama for not representing the American people because of his status, but then calls Trump a “blue-collar billion,” to which Stewart says, “that’s not a thing.” Stewart brought it all together, saying of Fox News’ hypocrisy,
You [Fox News] don’t care as long as its their thin-skinned, prompter[-reading], authoritarian, tyrant, narcissist. You just want that person to give you your country back, because you feel that your this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that, this country isn’t your’s, you don’t own it.
Stewart’s political commentary is as sharp as it’s ever been, tinged with an anger showing just how much he cares about this country and where it’s headed. With outlets such as Fox News twisting this country and the news in favor of a racistwould-be fascist, Stewart’s absence from the political conversation is felt more acutely than ever.
