Gangsters Sling Spells in This Exclusive Tommy Gun Wizards Preview
Plus a First Look at Christian Ward & Tula Lotay’s Covers for Issue #2
Main Art by Christian Ward
Dark Horse Comics is keeping Christian Ward busy: in addition to illustrating the critically acclaimed Invisible Kingdom under the Berger Books imprint, Ward is flexing new muscles as the writer of Tommy Gun Wizards, an upcoming original series drawn by Abbott artist Sami Kivelä. Launching in August, Tommy Gun Wizards follows Eliot Ness and his Untouchables as they safeguard 1930s Chicago against criminals like Al Capone. The hook that sets Tommy Gun Wizards apart from dozens of other gangster outings is that the substance being shuffled around the city’s seedy underbelly isn’t alcohol—it’s Lick, a drug that imparts magical powers on its users.
“Tommy Gun Wizards is a fascinating combination of magic, mystery and gangster spirits in the prohibition era,” Kivelä said in a statement. “I really hope readers will have as much fun with the book as we have had making it.”
Paste readers can take an exclusive first look at Kivelä’s interior art for the genre-bending book below, along with a sneak peek at Ward’s main cover and Tula Lotay’s variant cover for issue #2. Tommy Gun Wizards #1 hits comic stores and digital retailers August 28th, 2019.
