Rick and Morty Meets Dungeons & Dragons in New Crossover Comic From Oni Press, IDW Publishing

The wait for Rick and Morty season four just got a little easier: IDW Publishing announced at C2E2 on Sunday that they, in partnership with Oni Press, will combine two beloved properties—Adult Swim’s acclaimed animated comedy and legendary tabletop fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons—for a four-issue comic book miniseries, set to debut this August.

The crossover, ostensibly titled Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons, comes to us from an appropriately prestigious creative team, as it’s penned by Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicles) and Jim Zub (The Avengers, Wayward), and illustrated by Eisner-nominated artist Troy Little (Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).

IDW’s announcement explains that the miniseries will “throw Rick and Morty into a high-fantasy adventure blended with the wit, humor and intelligence the show is widely celebrated for,” offering the following plot synopsis:

Morty goes to Rick for help to learn about Dungeons & Dragons, the game all the cool kids at his school are playing; naturally, things go horribly wrong as Rick, Morty, and the whole Smith family find themselves on an epic quest with no escape in sight.

“I love Rick and Morty with a powerful love, and I’ve played D&D since the 5th grade,” said Rothfuss in a statement. “So when they approached me about writing a story with both of them together? That’s some serious you-got-chocolate-in-my-peanut butter $#!& right there. I’m in. I’m all the way in. I’m gettin’ that chocolate all up in the peanut butter. Like, deep in. All the way in. It’s going to be sticky and delicious.” (Clearly, the author already has a feel for the madcap Rick and Morty tone. We practically read that quote in Justin Roiland’s voice.)

“The Dungeons & Dragons crew is letting Pat and I open a Pandora’s Box of insane adventure material and iconic creatures from the granddaddy of all tabletop role-playing games,” added Zub. “I wish I could say we’ll take good care of it, but, the simple truth is, this is Rick and Morty we’re talking about. No fantasy world or otherworldly plane of existence is safe.”

This crossover makes a mountain of sense: Zub has penned numerous D&D titles for IDW, while Oni Press is home to a number of Rick and Morty comics, and Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is an avowed D&D fanatic. It will be a treat to see what Rothfuss, Zub and Little come up with in combining the two iconic properties, both of which are beloved for the endless, imaginative storytelling possibilities that they present.

Again, Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons debuts this August. See the miniseries’ uncropped announcement art below.
