Glenfiddich’s New Fire & Cane is An Amazing $50 Bottle of Scotch

I have to admit, my first reaction when I saw the bottle for Glenfiddich’s new offering Fire & Cane was “Oh no.”

I tasted the whisky a few days before its release at a dinner with the brand during Tales of the Cocktail. When I looked at the bottle and the “fire” in the name, I presumed I was looking at a spicy, flavored whisky akin to Fireball. While I’ve definitely consumed my fair share of spicy whiskey, and will definitely have more in the future, it’s not exactly something I want in my scotch.

Turns out, my first impression was wrong. Very wrong.

Fire & Cane is the fourth and newest concept in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series. The “fire” part of the name refers to seated, smoky whisky used in the blend while the “cane” portion of the name refers to the rum casks that the whisky is finished in. That’s right. It’s finished in rum casks.

“This new single malt truly encapsulates the spirit of experimentation. We started with a question – what would happen if we did something with peat that we had not done before? The answer is an unconventional and unexpected whisky, one that is truly surprising,” said Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman. “During the tastings, some experienced the unusual smoky notes, while others tasted toffee flavors – this phenomenon can be attributed to the Scotch spending three months in sweet rum casks. It’s a bold combination, which I’m sure will appeal and intrigue single malt enthusiasts as well as those looking to try something new and different.”

On the nose you get toffee and fruit notes, paired with a touch of peat. The whisky itself is full of peaty goodness, with a bit of sweetness reminiscent of toasted marshmallow, toffee and baked apple.

It’s a truly delicious whisky — and it’s actually an affordable one. The whisky is priced at $49.99 for a 750ml bottle, putting it within reach for most scotch enthusiasts. It joins other whiskies in the brand’s experimental series including Glenfiddich India Pale Ale Cask Finish, Glenfiddich Project XX and Glenfiddich Winter Storm.

Bottled at 43% ABV, Glenfiddich Fire & Cane is now available with a suggested retail price of $49.99. You can snag a bottle now nationwide at your favorite liquor store.
