Yuengling’s New Pilsner Is Their First New Core Beer in 17 Years

Yuengling is not exactly a brewery known for taking big, crazy risks in terms of launching new products. As America’s oldest operating brewery, as well as the largest American-owned brewery (and craft brewery) in the country, despite being sold in only a third of the states where you can find a Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Yuengling’s role tends to be that of a calming, steady hand. Their classic products such as Yuengling Traditional Lager, Yuengling Porter or Yuengling Black & Tan are marked by their immutability—the tides go in and out in the industry, but those beers stay the same.

Now, however, Yuengling is doing something unexpected. For the first time in 17 years, the brewery is adding a new year-round beer to its core lineup. Yuengling Golden Pilsner sounds (more or less) like a simplified take on both German and Czech pilsner, “a modern pilsner crafted with the perfect balance of hop and malt character for crisp, smooth refreshment.” To quote the full description from the brewery:

“Yuengling Golden Pilsner is our unique interpretation of a refreshing pilsner with all of the qualities consumers have come to expect from Yuengling in a beer that is highly sessionable and full of flavor,” Jen Yuengling said, a sixth generation brewer. “We continue to listen to our fans and we saw an opportunity to deliver a new Yuengling beer that complements our core portfolio of iconic beers including Traditional lager, Light Lager and Black & Tan.”

Yuengling Golden Pilsner weighs in at 4.7% ABV and has the distinction of being an all-malt beer. That’s significant, given that until 2014 Yuengling didn’t hold the title of “craft” beer in the eyes of the Brewers Association because its classic flagship, Yuengling Traditional Lager, is made with adjuncts. After the “craft” definition was tweaked in 2014, however—which we’ve written about in depth this year—Yuengling’s new inclusion immediately made it the country’s largest craft brewery. The brewery goes on to say that Golden Pilsner “combines pale and specialty malts with Hallertau and Saaz hops to create a bold, noble hop-flavored brew that finishes with a smooth, clean finish.”

What does that actually mean consumers should expect? Well, it’s difficult to imagine that a pilsner from Yuengling will really pop with big noble hop flavors as you get from many craft brewers making the style these days. We’re not exactly expecting something that can stand up to luminaries in German beer styles such as Urban Chestnut in St. Louis or Austin Beer Garden Brewing in Austin, TX. But if the price point is similar to other core Yuengling beers, the new Golden Pilsner will hardly be competing against those premium products anyway. If we’re lucky, what you might get here is a refreshing, drinkable beer that is recognizable as pils … and at a dirt cheap price.

We’ll see soon enough, as the beer will be hitting store shelves on April 1 in six markets: central Pennsylvania, Virginia Beach, Cleveland, Ohio, Rhode Island, Georgia and select markets in Tampa and Orlando. This is all assuming we’re not dealing with a particularly mean April Fool’s joke, of course. After that introduction, Yuengling Golden pilsner will be available in May “in more locations,” with a full roll-out waiting until December.
