Get Ready to Go Beyond in New No Man’s Sky Update, Launching Later This Month

No Man’s Sky is getting a massive update that adds features fans have been clamoring for since the game’s launch. Dubbed Beyond, the update rolls out in just two short weeks on Aug. 14.

Most notably, Beyond is adding full support for virtual reality. With your headset, you’ll be able to hop in your spaceship and further immerse yourself in the beautiful universe Hello Games created. This press description is enough to get sci-fi fans salivating:

Grab the joystick and thruster to fly your starship over an unexplored alien planet as you peer out of the cockpit at the view below. Reach into your backpack to grab your multitool, touch it to switch to terrain manipulation, and carve out intricate shapes with unprecedented control. Play in multiplayer and casually wave to your non-VR friends or fist bump your VR peers. Anything possible in No Man’s Sky, NEXT or any other update will soon be ready and waiting as an immersive and enriched VR experience.

As for other updates, Hello Games is promising “an expanded Online experience will bring a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together.” The third promised addition in the Beyond update isn’t explained in the press release, though we can assume that it’ll likely expand the game’s lore with single-player content.

Beyond, like the game’s previous paradigm-shifting update, NEXT, will be entirely free. Following No Man’s Sky’s release back in 2016, the developers at Hello Games were met with death threats over failing to meet the massive expectations fans placed on them. In the years since, they’ve been steadily rebuilding goodwill with the fanbase by releasing these free expansions that have regularly exceeded expectations.

Whether Beyond will be the latest example of that remains to be seen, but the two new trailers released for the expansion suggest something great. Watch them below. No Man’s Sky: Beyond launches on Aug. 14 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. In the meanwhile, check out what we’ve said about the game in the past here.
