Super Mario Odyssey Is the Fastest-Selling Switch, Super Mario Title

Nintendo confirmed today that the recently released and critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey is the fastest-selling title in the Super Mario platformer series. The previous record holder was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which released in 2009.

Nintendo of America celebrated the sales news with a tweet:

According to a press release, the Nintendo Switch title sold 1.1 million units in the U.S. in just five days, making it the fastest-selling game for Nintendo’s new console, as well. It’s a large attachment rate, as Nintendo has sold around 2.6 million Switch units thus far. Considering Odyssey has surpassed the rate of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a title for Nintendo’s best-selling console, this news also speaks to the Switch’s success. We previously reported that the Switch is already set to surpass the numbers of the Wii U, Nintendo’s last clunker of a console.

Super Mario Odyssey also touts a Metacritic score of 97, with 43 perfect scores—Odyssey is now the best-reviewed game in the past three years, tied only with Nintendo’s other 2017 blockbuster, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
