Telltale Games Announces Minecraft, Stranger Things Projects in Partnership with Netflix

Late Wednesday night, Netflix and Telltale Games announced that they are collaborating together for two projects: Minecraft and Stranger Things. Minecraft: Story Mode, the five-part episodic adventure, is coming to Netflix this fall. Yes, that’s right: Minecraft: Story Mode will be playable on Netflix for subscribers. Meanwhile, Telltale also announced that it is working on a game based on Stranger Things, the popular Netflix series, for consoles and computers.

In a statement to TechRadar, Netflix responded with some clarification on the newly announced partnership and games:

1. We can confirm Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to our service this fall. It’s an extension of our other interactive stories we have on our service like Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile.

2. The Stranger Things project is being published by Telltale at a later date, not on the Netflix service. It’s part of our marketing and title promotion efforts.

3. We don’t have any plans to get into gaming. There’s a broad spectrum of entertainment available today. Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service.

Well, just like the show, Things just keep getting Stranger around here.

Telltale is known for working on a variety of popular series from other media, including Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy and more. This is the first collaboration between the two companies. One would imagine that this could be the start of an ongoing relationship and with Netflix’s ample catalog of exclusive series, there would be a lot of source material for Telltale to work with.

Telltale will release more information on these projects—and hopefully more about their partnership with Netflix—later this year.
