The series is in development at Prime Video, which secured the global rights to the Warhammer 40,000 franchise from Games Workshop in December 2022.
In his Instagram post, Cavill gave an insight into the creative process, saying, “My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world. Together, we’ve been sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts.”
Warhammer 40,000 is set in a grim, dystopian future where humanity struggles for survival, facing threats from aliens and other supernatural forces. The universe, originally created for a tabletop wargame, has expanded into various forms of media, including books, videogames, and more.
Cavill starred in Netflix’s The Witcher and has been involved in several controversies. These include making a comment suggesting that an increase in Black membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was racist, which led to a petition calling for his replacement in the series. He also critiqued the process of accountability following the MeToo movement, which later prompted him to publicly address his previous statement.
Games Workshop, the British board game company behind the Warhammer franchise, also shared an update, confirming that it has finalized creative guidelines and reached a final agreement with Amazon for the Warhammer 40,000 adaptation, as well as merchandising rights. Amazon now holds exclusive rights to the universe. However, the company noted that the production process may take several years.
No additional cast members or release date for the series have been announced.
