Ali Wong and Randall Park Star in Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe Trailer

Ali Wong and Randall Park star in the new trailer for the latest romantic comedy to join Netflix’s ever-expanding collection. Always Be My Maybe, an Asian-American-fronted flick with some serious When Harry Met Sally vibes, will hit Netflix on May 31.

Wong and Park play childhood besties Sasha and Marcus, respectively, who rekindle a lost flame when Sasha, a newly minted L.A. celeb chef, returns home to San Francisco to open a restaurant. Fifteen years after their extinguished romance, their red-hot flame reignites, with a few catches along the way.

After life aligns their paths again, Sasha and Marcus reminisce on their ill-fated romance, joking about creaky car sex in the Corolla that Marcus still drives.

“It might be even smaller and grosser than I remember,” Sasha says about Marcus’ car in the trailer.

“You better still be talking about my back seat!” Marcus counters.

With killer chemistry from the two sizzling comedy stars in its driver’s seat, Fresh Off the Boat showrunner Nahnatchka Khan as director, and a wacky Keanu Reeves cameo, Always Be My Maybe—a fun riff on Mariah Carey’s classic mid-tempo bop—promises an endearing story packed with adorably awkward moments and uproarious dialogue.

Wong and Park joined Filipino- and Chinese-American screenwriter Michael Golamco to write the script, and produced the film with Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman. Filming for the movie began in Vancouver, Canada, in May 2018, about a year before the new trailer was released Thursday.

A prolific, award-winning TV writer, Wong was catapulted into stardom in the comedy and TV worlds after her breakout Netflix stand-up special Baby Cobra, during the filming of which she was seven months pregnant in a fun, bizarre contrast to her deadpan, unabashedly feminist comedy style. Her most recent special Hard Knock Wife debuted last Mother’s Day.

Park, of Fresh Off the Boat fame, has also played roles in Aquaman, The Interview and Veep, as well as in 2015’s Everything Before Us, the first feature film by beloved Asian-American YouTube giants Wong Fu Productions.

Wong and Park are supported by an all-star cast including Vivian Bang, Karan Soni, Charlyne Yi, Daniel Dae Kim, James Saito, Lyrics Born and, of course, Michelle Buteau as Sasha’s wildly funny bestie.
