The teaser for S. Craig Zahler’s next film, Brawl in Cell Block 99, is out, and it looks as potent as you’d expect. Zahler’s last film, Bone Tomahawk, was an intense (read:intense) Western action film, and it certainly doesn’t look like he’s planning to let up with this offering. Bone Tomahawk was shot on a shoestring budget in just 21 days, and thankfully Zahler’s new work should allow him some breathing room.
The film stars Vince Vaughn as a retired boxer with a shaky marriage who finds himself in jail thanks to his drug-running. It’s probably a safe bet that he ends up in a cell block higher than 98, and that some sort of scuffle takes place there.
Vaughn raved about Zahler (who wrote and directed the movie, plus composed some of the songs) to Deadline, saying: “He’s a real artist who’s combining a lot of these talents that serve him well.” Vaughn went on to say all kinds of other nice things about his director, especially mentioning that he enjoyed working with him: “The characters are moving pieces, and really at the center of it are life questions. That’s what’s really compelling about his pieces.” The two will continue their working relationship, as Zahler’s next film, Dragged Across Concrete, will star Vaughn as well.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 also stars Jennifer Carpenter and Udo Kier, and it releases on Oct. 6. Watch the first teaser above.
