Leonardo DiCaprio Teaming With Glen Powell for Captain Planet Movie

Movies News Captain Planet

Leonardo DiCaprio is finally getting serious about his fight against climate change. THR reported Tuesday that DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions has teamed with Paramount to produce Captain Planet and save the Earth. The studio is in talks for the rights to the 1990s cartoon, and is looking at Jono Matt and Scream Queens’ Glen Powell to write the script.

As of yet, there is no word as to whether Powell, whose credits are mainly in front of the camera, may also star in the film. Captain Planet and the Planeteers aired from 1990 to 1992, and focused on five young people from all over the globe who were given magical rings that allowed them to control a natural element. When all five are united, they can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils.

According to THR, Paramount was hooked by Matt and Powell’s fresh take on the material. The pair plan to set the film after the show—in this future, Captain Planet is washed up, and needs the kids more than they need him.

Captain Planet seems like a natural fit for Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been an environmentalist and humanitarian for much of his adult life. Now that he’s finally won that Oscar, he’s free to put his passions onscreen.
