Here’s The One Thing 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool Had To Clear With Marvel

Fox’s rights to the X-Men, and thus Deadpool, made just about everything easy for the movie’s writers when it came to creating the story they wanted to tell.

Well, everything except for Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The character, who starred alongside fellow X-Man Colossus in Deadpool’s big screen debut, was in need of an “update” from her source material according to the movies’ screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

In the comics, Negasonic is both a minor character and originally had precognitive/telepathic abilities, but Reese and Wernick wanted to give her a little more flare. You know, to match that all the hype around her name, of course.

“It was the one thing we needed Marvel’s actual approval on, that they had to reach out for,” said co-writer Paul Wernick. ”[Director] Tim [Miller] has a relationship with [Marvel President] Kevin Feige and I think he went straight to Kevin because all the lawyers, you know, it gets messy with the lawyers.”

So what exactly did they do with her powers? The writers revealed to The Q & A Podcast that they turned her “into a literal warhead because we thought it was funnier.” They also noted that those adapted powers were more useful to Deadpool within the given narrative.
