Free Guy, the new film from Shawn Levy, has begun production with a cast and crew hand-picked, Super Smash Bros.-style, from every major pop-culture event from the past few years. It’s got everyone’s favorite electric rodent, Ryan Reynolds; international assassin Jodie Comer; Marvel’s comedic powerhouse Taika Waititi; and teenage angst-incarnate Joe Keery, among others.
Free Guy follows a lonely bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers that maybe there is a Master Hand behind this weird combination of people around him—turns out he’s a background character in a videogame called Free City.
Equally wild is the creative team behind the film, which features the work of folks known for the likes of Riverdale, Love, Simon, Room, Stranger Things, and the forthcoming Rocketman.
Free Guy, like most things nowadays, belongs to Disney. The film survived a recent wave of Fox film projects being scrapped by the House of Mouse, so perhaps Levy, Reynolds and company have something special (or at least potentially profitable) on their hands.
We’ll find out when Free Guy premieres on July 3, 2020.
