Watch Scarlett Johansson Pummel People in the First Trailer for Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell has come under fire for casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, so the film is already under quite a bit of scrutiny. Now, we’ve gotten our first extended look at what the live-action adaptation of the popular anime will look like, and it’s got, if nothing else, some extraordinary sets.

Johansson stars as The Major, a cyber policewoman tasked with taking down cyber criminals who are attempting to bring down the Hanka Robotics corporation. The Major eventually begins to question her reality and uncover the mysteries surrounding her identity.

The undeniably stylized trailer gives us a sense of the specificity of the world of the film, and also shows off some of the film’s major action set pieces. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and also stars Juliette Binoche, Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbæk and Japanese star Takeshi Kitano.

The Major was originally a Japanese character, and Johansson’s casting led many to accuse the film of whitewashing. The film’s producers have defended the choice, saying that Johansson was simply the right actress for the part. We’ll find out whether that’s the case when Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31. Check out the trailer above, and the film’s first batch of teasers here.
