Emilia Clarke’s gone from the game of thrones to the game of love in the trailer for a new holiday-themed romantic comedy, Last Christmas. We know what you’re thinking; Christmas rom-coms are best suited for the Hallmark Channel. Honestly, the trailer does little to dispel that notion at first. Clarke plays Londoner Kate, a bah-humbugged employee at a year-round Christmas shop. She is cynical and jaded—her boss, Crazy Rich Asians’s Michelle Yeoh, calls her “Lazy Elf”—but handsome stranger Henry Golding (also of Crazy Rich Asians) appears to shake things up.
All right, so the meet-cute is more than tired—bird poop on the face, really? But with a plot point echoing Clarke’s real-life health scares and an impressive pedigree, Last Christmas might prick up the ears of even the grumpiest elf. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) directs a script from playwright Byrony Kimmings and Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Love Actually)—taking double duty playing Kate’s heavily-accented, fretful mother. And we can’t have a film titled Last Christmas without George Michael, right? Previously unreleased material by the late artist will premiere alongside the movie. It’s just one more reason to deck the halls when Last Christmas arrives in theaters Nov. 8.
