There’s Going to be a Mary Poppins Sequel Starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda

Rumors of Disney rebooting a live-action sequel to their 1964 Mary Poppins have been confirmed as Disney released the title to the sequel on Monday. The sequel Mary Poppins Returns will be released Dec. 25, 2018 and will star Emily Blunt (Into the Woods and The Devil Wears Prada) as Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as a street lamplighter named Jack.

Rob Marshall will direct the film and produce it with John DeLuca and Marc Platt, who collaborated on Into the Woods. The screenplay, based on the original Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers, will be written by David Magee and music will be written Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

According to a press release, the film takes place in a Depression-era London and focuses on Mary Poppins visiting a grown-up Jane and Michael Banks and Michael’s three children, after the family experiences a personal loss.
