Enter Multiple Web-Slingers in First Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Trailer
The skyline might get a little crowded
Images via Sony Pictures EntertainmentSony Pictures Animation has released the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse following the teaser trailer that was released last December. From the start, the trailer pops with a color and style that is directly inspired by the comic books in which Spider-Man was created—action manifests via the common onomatopoeias found in comics, text-bubbles enter in and out of frame, and the action looks as if it’s imbuing a comic book panel with a pulsing, frenetic sense of motion. The animation is downright breathtaking and the trailer knows this, because it features many striking and gasp-inducing shots.
The trailer opens with Miles Morales getting ready for school in a last-minute way that any teen could relate to and he is then driven to school by his father, who happens to be a police officer, taking Miles to school in his squad car. Cue situational humor, dad jokes and embarrassment. Kids, say “I love you” to your parents or else they’ll embarrass you! On the humor note, nearly every comical beat in the trailer hits and lends itself towards the film’s overall fun and breezy tone. Soon enough, we are introduced to an older Peter Parker, who proclaims himself Miles’ mentor after realizing they share the same spider-gifted powers, and he still has the quick wit and charm that informed his younger years. Plus, he loves hamburgers.
Eventually, both Peter and Miles don their Spider-suits and web-swing into action. The mere act of them doing so is gorgeous as the action and movement have a sense of speed that feels as otherworldly as it is tangible. Teacher and student swing their way through a snow-covered forest and soon find themselves surprised by the appearance of another Spidey-being—enter Spider-Gwen. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, while a story centered around Miles Morales and his budding hero’s journey, teases a literal universe where anyone who has ever shot a web in Marvel Comics is fair game for an appearance.
In addition to learning more about the movie’s plot, a wider breadth of the cast has been revealed. Shameik Moore voices Spider-Man/Miles Morales, Jake Johnson voices Peter Parker, Hailee Steinfeld lends her voice to Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Mahershala Ali voices Miles’ uncle Aaron (Donald Glover portrayed him in Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Velez voice Miles’ parents. Also, Lily Tomlin is voicing Aunt May and Liev Schreiber’s character has been revealed as none other than The Kingpin—the larger-than-life crime boss who has New York under his (huge) thumb.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, from a screenplay by Phil Lord (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street). Christina Steinberg, Amy Pascal, Lord, Christopher Miller and Avi Arad are credited as producers. Spider-Verse swings its way into theaters on Dec. 14 via Sony Pictures Animation.
