Spidey Protects Venice, Meets Mysterio in First Spider-Man: Far From Home Teaser

The much-anticipated first teaser for Spider-Man: Homecoming follow-up Spider-Man: Far From Home has arrived, shedding light on a bit of the mystery—and Mysterio—that has dominated the conversation surrounding the Sony/Marvel sequel.

The grim gravitas of Avengers: Infinity War (and what we’ve seen of Avengers: Endgame so far) is nowhere to be found here, as the first full minute of the teaser returns to the energetic, teen-comedy comfort zone where Homecoming spent much of its runtime, this time following Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and company—including Zendaya’s M.J., Jacob Batalon’s Ned, Angourie Rice’s Betty Brant and Tony Revolori’s Flash Thompson—on a school trip abroad. But once the superhero sparks start flying, Far From Home starts looking more like the Marvel blockbuster it is, complete with appearances from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the first footage of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio.

That last bit is, of course, the teaser’s big reveal, though it does little to answer the central question of Gyllenhaal’s iconic character: Is he friend, foe or somewhere in between? It’s been rumored that Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck, will team up with Spidey in this film, rather than opposing him, which the teaser would appear to support, as the bubble-helmeted Master of Illusions is seen battling a group of shape-shifting beings of some kind, warning Peter, “You don’t want any part of this,” before attacking one of the creatures with distinctly Doctor Strange-like magic. And lest we forget, Michael Keaton will reprise his Homecoming role as Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture, further muddying the waters of just who our antagonist is here.

Gyllenhaal’s own recent comments have done the most to clarify the situation: Appearing at CCXP 2018 in December, the actor explained, “There are these threats to the world, the Elementals, elemental creatures … and Mysterio, who knows about them and wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And then he teams up your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and unfortunately has to make him become more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Far From Home, directed by returning Homecoming helmer Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, opens on July 5, 2019.
