Spider-Man: Homecoming Producers on Zendaya’s Character: “She’s Not Mary Jane Watson”

Zendaya’s Spider-Man: Homecoming character, Michelle, doesn’t get much screen time. She’s introduced as a loner with a passion for justice and offers comedic relief throughout the film. It isn’t until the very end that Michelle reveals her nickname to be M.J., alluding to the love of Spider-Man’s life, Mary Jane Watson.

“There are big reveals in the movie. That’s not one of them,” producer Kevin Feige told IGN. “We never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his past love. She’s not Mary Jane Watson.”

While this is a bummer to those who expected Zendaya’s character to be Mary Jane (including us), according to producer Amy Pascal, there’s still a chance for a romance between Peter Parker and Michelle: “Is she going to date Peter? Are they going to fall in love? She seems to be intrigued with him. There’s a nice chemistry there. Who knows what will happen in future films?”
