Remember that Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer tease that aired during Super Bowl LII on Sunday night? Well, here’s the teaser that trailer tease was trailer-teasing.
“I’ve been running scams on the streets since I was 10,” announces Alden Ehrenreich to kick off the clip, establishing his roguish Han Solo-ness in a speeder chase with Emilia Clarke’s character before Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett recruits him for a mystery mission. Also joining Beckett’s crew are Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian (or Childish Landino, as the internet has taken to calling him), Thandie Newton’s mysterious character, an alien of some kind and, of course, Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo). There’s also a brief look at a pilot droid, reportedly named L3-37 and played via motion capture by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, perhaps in Solo’s attempt to create another fan-favorite robo-character, a la Rogue One’s K-2SO (Alan Tudyk).
The plot of Solo, for the most part, still has yet to take shape, but today’s first teaser begins to point us in some sort of tangible direction. The relationship between Solo and Clarke’s Qi’ra appears key, as the two go way back and, as Qi’ra claims near the end of the teaser, she “might be the only person who knows what [he] really [is].” For what it’s worth, Disney’s summary simply tells us, “Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.” The nebulousness of the film’s narrative may very well be a symptom of its turbulent production, which was taken over by Ron Howard after previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired over creative differences. According to a recent interview Waller-Bridge gave to IGN, though, the transition went smoothly: “The handover there was done with such warmth and generosity from everybody, and Ron’s just a master at his craft; he’s going to make a beautiful film out of it,” she said, adding, “We’d done some really, really great stuff with Chris and Phil that everyone was really thrilled with, and I think a lot of that will still be in it.”
