The Irishman‘s Full Trailer Offers a Closer Look at Scorsese’s Latest

Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated film The Irishman received a full trailer on Wednesday night during star Robert De Niro’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. With a Netflix release on Nov. 27, it’s only a matter of time before fans learn if it is either another fantastic Scorsese, or a fantastic Scorsese tarnished by the nature of its cast’s digitally de-aged faces—which Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker has said will be the case for half of the entire film.

The trailer itself provides glimpses of a younger Al Pacino, De Niro and Joe Pesci, and introduces a stellar supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Graham, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jack Huston, Kathrine Narducci, Domenick Lombardozzi, Paul Herman, Gary Basaraba and Marin Ireland.

The Irishman’s synopsis describes “an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran (De Niro), a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino), and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.”

Based on Charles Brandt’s 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses, The Irishman was adapted by Steven Zaillian and reportedly cost Netflix $200 million (“youthifying” the cast is apparently a very expensive endeavor) to produce. Scorsese shot the movie on both film and digital, and is relying on Industrial Light & Magic to de-age his principal cast for flashback sequences, per THR. The latest NYFF press screening guidance reveals that the ambitious film’s final runtime is a whopping 3 hours and 29 minutes—that’s actually one minute shorter than the film’s previously reported, 210-minute runtime, though it remains the longest movie of Scorsese’s career.

A Netflix original, The Irishman hits limited theaters on Nov. 1 before getting a wider release on Nov. 8.
