Showtime Debuts The Kingmaker Trailer and Poster

Emmy-winning director Lauren Greenfield’s latest film The Kingmaker will open in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 8, announced Showtime on Monday.

Revolving around the indomitable character of Imelda Marcos, Greenfield’s film examines the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines, exploring the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicling Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency. To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country. In an age when fake news manipulates elections, the Marcos family’s comeback story serves as a dark fairy tale.

For someone who grew up in the Philippines and saw firsthand the extent of the Marcos’ corruption, just the trailer is bone-chilling. Intimate interviews with the former first lady, and archived footage of riots, Picasso paintings and Imelda’s infamous 1,220 pairs of shoes all paint a picture of the turmoil that led to the 1986 People Power Revolution—unseating Imelda’s kleptocrat husband, Ferdinand Marcos, and forcing the family into exile.

While we wait for November, watch the trailer (and check out the film’s poster) below.
