Luc Besson’s Valerian Gets Its First Trailer with Some Beatles Accompaniment

Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is a campy, goofy sci-fi classic. Though it was slightly too weird for its own commercial good, the movie has the exact kind of bizarre personality that propels a movie to cult status. The first trailer for Besson’s newest sci-fi movie Valerian doesn’t look quite that goofy, but it’s definitely got a healthy heaping of Besson’s signature style.

Set to the tune of The Beatles’ “Because” (it’s sort of like a sadder version of Suicide Squad’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” trailer), the trailer doesn’t exactly give away any plot details. Dane DeHaan, the titular hero, and Cara Delevingne seem to be figuring out their rocky relationship as they run into some big monsters, do some videogame-style platforming, hang out with Rihanna and tangle with some gorgeously rendered aliens.

In the original comic book series, the duo also travel through time, and though there are no direct mentions of that in the trailer, the tag line, “A universe without boundaries needs heroes with no limits,” could imply that there’s more that they’re not showing us just yet.

The movie’s full title is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, but it seems like they’re doing a John Carter of Mars thing where they downplay the nerdy part of the title.

Selling an audience on a bizarre, over-the-top sci-fi world is difficult, especially if it’s not an already-beloved property, so here’s hoping that even if this doesn’t launch a new franchise (which the studio is clearly hoping for), it’ll at least be a worthy follow-up to The Fifth Element. Valerian is due out in July of 2017—watch the trailer above.
