Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the movies, The Shallows comes along to take a bite out of your false sense of security. Blake Lively stars in the forthcoming Columbia Pictures thriller, which essentially seems like a compelling cross between 127 Hours and Jaws. Today’s is the first full-length trailer for the film—its initial teaser came out last month. The trailer will screen in theaters preceding Captain America: Civil War showings, ensuring, just in time for the summer, that beach attendance takes a steep nationwide drop.
The Shallows follows medical student Nancy Adams (Lively) as she travels to a beautiful and secluded surf spot that turns out to be the feeding ground of an enormous, malevolent great white. When she’s attacked by the shark and her companions are killed—very graphically, and in the trailer—Nancy ends up bloodied and stranded on a rock 200 yards from shore while the shark circles. What follows is a life-or-death struggle in which “survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude,” per the film’s synopsis.
The Shallows was helmed by action-horror director Jaume Collet-Serra, who most recently directed Liam Neeson in Run All Night. The film was written by Anthony Jaswinski (Kristy) and produced by Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem.
The Shallows terrorizes audiences starting June 29.
