Watch the Intense Teaser for Idris Elba’s Directorial Debut Yardie

Golden Globe-winning actor Idris Elba has directed his first feature, Yardie. The film, according to Studiocanal, its U.K. distributor, is about a young Jamaican man named D who has never fully recovered from his older brother’s murder, committed during his childhood. From there, D grows up under the wing of music producer King Fox and goes to London where he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart. While in London, he comes face to face with his brother’s murderer and internally battles between journeying down a quest for retribution or walking the path of righteousness.

The film premiered at Sundance this year and is currently seeking U.S. and international distribution at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film stars Aml Ameen (Sense8, The Maze Runner) as D, Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire) and newcomer Shantol Jackson as D’s childhood sweetheart, Yvonne. Elba won a Golden Globe for his performance in the recurring limited BBC series Luther, and has starred in several blockbuster and critically acclaimed films, including Thor, Prometheus, Pacific Rim, Zootopia and most recently, Molly’s Game. He won a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor for his dark turn as the fearful commander of child soldiers in a fictional West African country in Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation. Elba began filming on the most recent season of Luther in London back in January.
