Following an enticing teaser, the full trailer for actor Idris Elba’s directorial debut Yardie has been released by U.K. distributor Studiocanal.
The trailer gives us more insight into main character D (Aml Ameen) as he struggles through the gang and drug culture of Jamaica and London in the ‘70s and ‘80s. When the opportunity to avenge the murder of his brother presents itself, D must decide whether to follow the path of righteousness his older sibling always advocated for.
Based on Victor Headley’s best-selling 1993 novel Yardies, Elba’s adaptation has screened at Sundance and the Berlin Film Festival. Besides pulling from his own experiences, Elba said he also drew inspiration from Brazilian film City of God, and hopes to capture a similar authenticity to projects like The Wire and Beasts of No Nation that he has acted in, per Deadline.
A true jack of all trades, the Yardie director has recently signed on to direct, star in, produce and produce music for Netflix’s modern retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Yardie opens on Aug. 24 in the U.K., but is currently without a U.S. release date. Watch the trailer below.
