Animal Collective Detail Forthcoming Album Tangerine Reef, Share First Single

Animal Collective’s forthcoming collaboration album with Coral Morphologic, a multimedia company that rallies for coral reef conservation and awareness, officially has a release date, tracklist and artwork. Out Aug. 17 via Domino, Tangerine Reef, a double LP, is also debuting as an audiovisual project available on the band’s tricked-out new website. After a fan caught wind of the album’s existence last week, an official announcement, as well as the album trailer and lead single, arrived Monday. You can watch the album trailer below, but the single, “Hair Cutter,” as well as its companion video, are currently Apple Music exclusives. If you subscribe to the streaming service, you can check out the psychedelic “Hair Cutter” right here.

Tangerine Reef, arriving as a sort of awareness project in commemoration of the 2018 International Year of the Reef, is Animal Collective’s follow-up to 2016’s Painting With. The music will be released digitally, on CD and as a double vinyl LP, but the website film promises a more immersive listening experience: Actual microscopic footage of colorful, life-producing coral will serve as a backdrop to the band’s music, some of which debuted earlier this year at Festival Disruption. You can catch a sneak peek of the kaleidoscopic coral in the trailer.

The band also shared a visual tidbit on Twitter, which further signals that Tangerine Reef will be a feast for the eyes, as well as the ears.

Again, you can watch the album trailer for Tangerine Reef below. Further down, you’ll find the album art and tracklist.
